SEMI-FINALS

Four Seamers sides made the 2008 superleague semi-finals – Mens A, B & C and Ladies. Only Mens A had a victory on the day but Mens C also survive after earning the double chance. Mens B drop out after a narrow loss while the Ladies match was abandoned after the tragic passing of a Melville player during the game – our thoughts are with her friends and family.

A GRADE

After Bouncer won the toss and elected to bat first, it was a cautious opening as Seamers came hard with the ball and Bouncer resisted with the bat – not a lot of runs were scored but importantly for Bouncer not many wickets lost. After the second pair came back from a slow start, the honours were even at 40 after eight overs. The final eight overs were another tough slog as both teams tried to gain ascendency but Seamers wickets saw them as slight favourites after their target was set at 71. Scott Brown and Ben Sandhu opened up with 28 in reply and at the half way mark the total was 45. Bouncer had the better of the next four overs but the Jasons – Priest and Brown – batted splendidly under pressure to get Seamers over the line with a skin of 31. Seamers will face Ballajura in Friday night’s preliminary final.

Bouncer made the early running in this match, recording skins of 25 and 20 to start he match. Seamer started to gain some momentum during the third partnership but it was a tight contest right throughout. The final total for Bouncer was 82. Seamers opened with 17 and 29 from their opening two pairs before skipper Rob Stephen and Marty Hinkley hit 34 to put Seamers in the box seat. But with not much to defend in the final skin, Bouncer dug deep and took enough wickets to secure themselves victory in a nail biter, to end a gallant Seamers’ season.

In a rematch of the final round clash, Seamer this time batted first and overall were pegged down by Melville. No Seamer pair fell in a heap though and all managed to make valuable contributions, in particular veterans Matt Glamuzina and Greg Erceg who top scored with 31. In defence of their 69 run total, Seamer were uncharacteristically sloppy in the field and bowled an inconsistent line and length which enabled Melville to hit 95, reversing the result of their final round clash to progress through to Sunday’s grand final. Seamers live to fight another day but will have to be on their game for Friday night’s preliminary final against Bouncer.
